Denver punches above its weight for museums. The regional sales tax known as the SCFD supports hundreds of cultural organizations across the metro area, which helps explain both the number of museums and the frequency of free days. For visitors, the good news is geographic: the major institutions sit in two compact clusters, so a car is optional and a museum day can be walked.
The Golden Triangle Creative District
The Golden Triangle lies just south of Civic Center Park and the State Capitol, bounded roughly by Colfax Avenue, Broadway and Speer Boulevard. Within those few blocks you will find more significant museums than in many entire cities.
Denver Art Museum
The anchor of the district, and one of the largest art museums between Chicago and the West Coast. The angular Hamilton Building and the renovated Martin Building, Gio Ponti's castle-like tower clad in glass tiles, face each other across a plaza. The collections of Indigenous arts of North America, of Latin American art and of Western American art are standouts. General admission is free every day for visitors 18 and under. See our Denver Art Museum notes on the main guide for hours and free days.
Clyfford Still Museum
A museum devoted to a single artist, the Abstract Expressionist painter Clyfford Still, whose estate required that his work be kept together in a city that would build a museum for it. Denver did, and the museum opened in 2011. The concrete building filters daylight onto huge canvases. Even visitors who are unsure about abstract art often find it unexpectedly moving, and it rarely feels crowded.
History Colorado Center
The state history museum moved into its current building in 2012. Exhibits cover the people and events of Colorado from Indigenous nations to mining camps, ski towns and modern politics, with hands-on displays that work well for older children. Its rooftop terrace has a view over the district.
Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art
One of the most unusual museums in Denver. It combines the paintings of Colorado artist Vance Kirkland with a large collection of decorative art and design from the late 1800s through the modern era, displayed salon-style in rooms that feel like a designer's home. Age restrictions have applied to young children because of the open displays, so check the policy before bringing kids.
Byers-Evans House Museum and the Denver Firefighters Museum
Two small, inexpensive stops. The Byers-Evans House is a preserved Victorian home of two prominent early Denver families, shown as it looked in the early twentieth century. The Firefighters Museum occupies a historic downtown firehouse and is a hit with young children.
Denver Central Library
Not a museum, but worth a look. The library's postmodern building by Michael Graves sits beside the art museum, and its Western History and Genealogy collection is one of the most important in the region. Entry is free.
City Park: science and nature
About three miles east of downtown, City Park holds the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the Denver Zoo. The museum's dinosaur halls, gem and mineral collection, Egyptian mummies and extensive wildlife dioramas make it Denver's best all-ages museum, and the Gates Planetarium and giant-screen theater add separately ticketed shows. The steps outside the museum have one of the best skyline-and-mountain views in the city, especially late in the day. Plan for at least half a day.
Capitol Hill history houses
Just east of the Golden Triangle, Capitol Hill was where Denver's silver and gold fortunes built mansions in the late 1800s. The Molly Brown House Museum tells the story of Margaret Brown, the Titanic survivor, activist and philanthropist whose life was far more interesting than her nickname suggests. Guided tours run through the restored home. Combine it with a walk past the mansions along the surrounding streets.
Smaller and specialty museums worth a detour

Hours and admission at smaller museums can change with little notice, and some open only part of the week. Always check the museum's own site the day before.

Frequently asked questions
Which Denver museum should I visit if I only have time for one?
For most visitors it is either the Denver Art Museum, for art, architecture and Indigenous and Western collections, or the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, for dinosaurs, gems, wildlife dioramas and the planetarium. Families with younger children usually prefer the Museum of Nature & Science.
Are there free museum days in Denver?
Yes. Many Denver-area cultural institutions offer free days funded through the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, a regional sales tax. Dates vary by museum and often require advance reservations, so check each museum's calendar.
What museums are in Denver's Golden Triangle?
The district south of Colfax Avenue and the Civic Center includes the Denver Art Museum, the Clyfford Still Museum, History Colorado Center, the Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, the Byers-Evans House Museum and the Denver Firefighters Museum, with the Denver Central Library alongside.
Are Denver museums good for a rainy or snowy day?
Very. The Golden Triangle museums sit within a few blocks of each other, so you can visit two or three on foot, and the Museum of Nature & Science can easily fill most of a day.
